so it's sometime after 2am and nearly at 3am JST.

subtract 14 hours and you get? (without DST) 1250pm ... ish.. on the East Coast.

if he's on the West Coast it would be 850am... if he's in Alaska it would be 750am (Alaska is 1 hour behind the Pacific Time Zone).

if he's in Hawaii it would be 550am (Hawaii Aleutian Time /part of the chain of islands off the West Coast of Alaska share a time zone with Hawaii/) because its own time zone is 2h behind Alaskan Standard Time.

so, he could be in the USA and say it's dark outside right there. but he'd have to be in Hawaii. :> and it would probably have to be late Fall or early Winter for the Sun to be just under the horizon at 6am.
